Vampyropoda was named by von Boletzky (1992). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Octobrachia by Fuchs et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Coleoidea by Fuchs et al. (2008); and to Neocoleoidea by Whalen and Landman (2022).
