Taxonomy
Calais newboldi was named by Woodward (1896). It is a compression preserving soft parts. Its type locality is Sahil Alma (Newbold collection), which is in a Santonian carbonate lime mudstone in Lebanon. It is the type species of Palaeoctopus, Calais.
It was recombined as Palaeoctopus newboldi by Woodward (1896) and Fuchs et al. (2008).
