Taeniothaerus farleyensis was named by Briggs (1998). Its type specimen is UQ F75291, a valve (Ventral valve, internal mold), and it is a mold. Its type locality is UQ L5115, Mount View, which is in an Artinskian marine sandstone in the Farley Formation of Australia.
