Clinolobus was named by Gemmellaro (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Clinolobus telleri. It is the type genus of Clinolobidae.
It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Clinolobidae by Korn (2006); and to Clinolobinae by Furnish et al. (2009).
