Taxonomy
Tympanoceras was named by Ruzhencev (1958) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302,304]. It is not extant. Its type is Tympanoceras trisulcatum.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Cravenoceratinae by Korn (2006) and Furnish et al. (2009); and to Lyrogoniatitinae by Korn and Sudar (2016).
