Paguma was named by Gray (1831). It is extant. Its type is Gulo larvatus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Paradoxurus by Mivart (1882).

It was assigned to Viverridae by Allen (1929); to Paradoxurinae by Gaubert et al. (2004); and to Paradoxurini by Morales and Pickford (2011).
