Prochoristella was named by Riek (1953). Its type is Prochoristella megaloprepia.
It was assigned to Permochoristidae by Novokshonov (1997); to Permochoristinae by Novokshonov (1997); and to Mesopanorpodidae by Riek (1953), Riek (1955), Riek (1976), Willmann (1978), Carpenter (1992), Papier et al. (1996), van Dijk and Geertsema (1999) and Lian et al. (2020).
