Tappenosauridae was named by Olson and Beerbower (1953). It is not extant. Its type is Tappenosaurus.

It was assigned to Eodeinocephalia by Olson (1962); and to Sphenacodontia by Olson and Beerbower (1953) and Kuhn (1966).
