Mesotanyderus was named by Riek (1955). It is not extant. Its type is Mesotanyderus jonesi.

It was assigned to Permotanyderidae by Riek (1955); to Mesopanorpodidae by Willmann (1978); and to Mecoptera by Carpenter (1992).
