Cathartes was named by Illiger (1811). It is extant. Its type is Vultur aura. It is the type genus of Cathartinae.
It was assigned to Vulturidae by Hay (1930); to Cathartinae by Amadon (1977); and to Cathartidae by Moreno and Mercerat (1891), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Clements et al. (2017).
