Taxonomy
Notospirifer excelsus was named by Waterhouse (1968). Its type specimen is NZGS BR 1383, a shell (Articulated internal mold), and it is a mold. Its type locality is GS9188, Arthurton, which is in a Wuchiapingian marine limestone in the AG4 Formation of New Zealand.
