Eocathayornis was named by Zhou (2002). Its type is Eocathayornis walkeri.
It was assigned to Euenantiornithes by Cau and Arduini (2008); to Cathayornithidae by Zhou (2002) and Zhou and Wang (2010); and to Enantiornithes by O'Connor and Zelenkov (2013), Zhang et al. (2014), Wang et al. (2014), Wang et al. (2014), Wang et al. (2015) and Wang and Liu (2015).
