Homoceras was named by Sepkoski (2002) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Homoceratidae, Homoceratinae.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Homoceratidae by Korn (2006); and to Homoceratinae by Furnish et al. (2009).
