Taxonomy
Liaoningornis was named by Hou (1997). It is the type genus of Liaoningornithidae.
It was assigned to Liaoningornithidae by Hou (1997), Hou (1997) and Zhou and Wang (2010); to Enantiornithes by O'Connor (2012) and O'Connor and Zelenkov (2013); and to Ornithuromorpha by Kurochkin et al. (2013) and Wang et al. (2014).
