Imitoceras was named by Schindewolf (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m C Tour-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,302,304,1042]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Imitoceratidae.

It was reranked as Prionoceras (Imitoceras) by Campbell and Engel (1963).

It was assigned to Prionoceras by Campbell and Engel (1963); to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Prionoceratidae by Furnish et al. (2009); and to Imitoceratinae by Korn (2006) and Korn and Sudar (2016).
