Neothecoseris circulus was named by Eliasova (1994). Its type locality is Netreba, Czechia, which is in a Cenomanian carbonate limestone in the Korycany Formation of the Czech Republic.
It was recombined as Brachyphyllia circulus by Baron-Szabo (2009).
