Emys vulgaris japonica was named by Temminck and Schlegel (1835). It is extant.

It was recombined as Emys japonica by Duméril and Duméril (1851); it was recombined as Clemmys japonica by Nakamura (1935); it was recombined as Mauremys japonica by Bickham (1975) and van Dijk et al. (2014).
