Taxonomy

Megatherium laurillardi was named by Lund (1842).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Hoffstetter (1952), Gazin (1957) and Paula Couto (1979); it was recombined as Eremotherium laurillardi by Hoffstetter (1954), Cartelle and Bohorquez (1982), Cartelle and De Iuliis (1995), Hulbert and Pratt (1998), De Iuliis and Cartelle (1999), Pujos (2006) and McDonald and Naples (2007).

Synonyms

Xenocnus cearensis was named by Paula Couto (1980) [not an astragalus but an unciform, contra Paul Couto]. Its type specimen is MNRJ 2851-V, a set of postcrania (unciform), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Eremotherium laurillardi by Cartelle et al. (2008).
Glyptodon juanajuatense was named by Duges (1882).

It was recombined as Eremotherium juanajuatense by Mones (1973); it was synonymized subjectively with Eremotherium laurillardi by McDonald and Naples (2007).
Chelonia couperi was named by Harlan (1842).

It was synonymized subjectively with Eremotherium mirabile by Ray (1979); it was synonymized subjectively with Eremotherium laurillardi by Cartelle and De Iuliis (1995) and Hulbert and Pratt (1998).
Eremotherium carolinense was named by Spillmann (1948).

It was synonymized subjectively with Eremotherium rusconii by Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was synonymized subjectively with Eremotherium laurillardi by Cartelle and De Iuliis (1995) and Hulbert and Pratt (1998).
Megatherium hudsoni was named by White (1941).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Hulbert (1992); it was synonymized subjectively with Eremotherium laurillardi by Cartelle and De Iuliis (1995).
