Madrepora areolata was named by Linnaeus (1758).

It was recombined as Maeandrina areolata by Lesueur (1821); it was recombined as Maeandra areolata by Verrill (1901); it was recombined as Manicina areolata by Leuckart (1841) and Duerden (1902).
