Embolophorus was named by Cope (1878). It is not extant. Its type is Embolophorus fritillus.

It was assigned to Pelycosauria by Cope (1878); to Clepsydropidae by Cope (1888) and Hay (1902); and to Reptilia by Hay (1930).
