Pericyclus was named by Mojsisovics (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C Tour-u Sepkoski's reference number: 304,954]. It is not extant. Its type is Goniatites princeps.

It was reranked as Ammonellipsites (Pericyclus) by Gordon (1964).

It was assigned to Ammonellipsites by Gordon (1964); to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pericyclinae by Korn (2006) and Furnish et al. (2009).
