Peytonoceras was named by Saunders (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302,304]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Girtyoceratidae by Korn (2006); and to Girtyoceratinae by Furnish et al. (2009).
