Phaneroceras was named by Plummer and Scott (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash-u C Mosc-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302].

It was reranked as Pseudoparalegoceras (Phaneroceras) by Gordon (1964).

It was assigned to Pseudoparalegoceras by Gordon (1964); to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pseudoparalegoceratidae by Korn (2006) and Furnish et al. (2009).
