Protoculicoides was named by Boesel (1937). Its type is Protoculicoides depressus.
It was assigned to Ceratopogoninae by Boesel (1937); to Forcipomyiinae by Borkent and Wirth (1997); to Atriculicoidinae by Szadziewski et al. (2016); and to Ceratopogonidae by Carpenter (1992), Szadziewski (1996), Pérez-de la Fuente et al. (2011), Borkent (2013), Choufani et al. (2015), Borkent (2019) and Borkent and Dominiak (2020).
It was assigned to Ceratopogoninae by Boesel (1937); to Forcipomyiinae by Borkent and Wirth (1997); to Atriculicoidinae by Szadziewski et al.
