Taxonomy

Amoeboceras was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-u J Kimm-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Ammonites alternans.

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cardioceratinae by Arkell et al. (1957), Mesezhnikov (1984), Schlegelmilch (1994) and Schairer and Schlampp (2003).

Prionoceras was named by Buckman (1920) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m Sepkoski's reference number: 302,1042]. It is not extant.

It was synonymized objectively with Amoeboceras by Howarth (2017).

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Prionoceratinae by Korn (2006); and to Prionoceratidae by Furnish et al. (2009).
