Cecidomyia was named by Meigen (1803). It is extant. It is the type genus of Cecidomyiinae, Cecidomyiidi, Cecidomyiini.
It was assigned to Cecidomyidae by Aldrich (1905); to Diptera by Cockerell (1927); to Cecidomyiidae by Cockerell (1908) and Carpenter (1992); and to Cecidomyiini by Gagné and Jaschhof (2014).
