Shumardites was named by Smith (1903) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-u Tr Indu-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Shumardites simondsi. It is the type genus of Shumarditidae.
It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Shumarditidae by Korn (2006) and Furnish et al. (2009).
