Younginiformes was named by Romer (1933). It was considered monophyletic by Laurin (1991) and paraphyletic by Bickelmann et al. (2009).

It was reranked as the suborder Younginiformes by Haughton and Brink (1954) and Currie (1982); it was reranked as the unranked clade Younginiformes by Laurin (1991), Laurin and Reisz (1995) and Bickelmann et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Eosuchia by Haughton and Brink (1954); to Eosuchia by Currie (1982); to Lepidosauromorpha by Benton (1985); to Lepidosauromorpha by Gauthier et al. (1989); to Diapsida by Laurin and Reisz (1995); and to Neodiapsida by Laurin (1991) and Bickelmann et al. (2009).
