Chrysops was named by Meigen (1803). It is extant. It is the type genus of Chrysopsinae.
It was assigned to Tabanidae by Aldrich (1905), Theobald (1937), Piton (1940) and Carpenter (1992); and to Chrysopsini by Morita et al. (2016).
