Taxonomy
Acrocera was named by Meigen (1803). It is extant. It is the type genus of Acroceridae, Acrocerinae.

It was assigned to Cyrtidae by Aldrich (1905); to Acroceridae by Carpenter (1992); and to Acrocerinae by Winterton and Gillung (2012) and Gillung and Winterton (2019).
