Sporadoceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-l D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302,457]. It is the type genus of Sporadoceratidae, Sporadoceratinae.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sporadoceratinae by Korn (2006) and Korn et al. (2015).
