Syrphus was named by Fabricius (1775). It is extant. It is the type genus of Syrphidae, Syrphinae, Syrphini.
It was assigned to Diptera by Latreille (1796); to Antliata by Fabricius (1775) and Fabricius (1798); to Syrphiae by Latreille (1802); to Syrphinae by Statz (1940), Hull (1945) and Werner (1969); to Syrphidae by Scudder (1878), Cockerell (1921) and Carpenter (1992); and to Syrphini by Mengual et al. (2015).
