Pipiza was named by Fallen (1810). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pipizini, Pipizinae.
It was assigned to Cheilosinae by Hull (1945); to Syrphidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Pipizini by Hull (1949) and Mengual et al. (2015).
