Rhingia was named by Scopoli (1763). It is extant. It is the type genus of Rhingiini.

It was assigned to Halterata by Scopoli (1763); to Diptera by Latreille (1796); to Syrphiae by Latreille (1802); to Cheilosinae by Hull (1945); to Rhingini by Hull (1949); to Syrphidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Rhingiina by Mengual et al. (2015).
