Temnostoma was named by Lepeletier and Serville (1828). It is extant. It is the type genus of Temnostomina.

It was assigned to Milesiinae by Statz (1940); to Temnostomini by Hull (1949); to Syrphidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Temnostomina by Mengual et al. (2015).
