Ripiphorus was named by Bosc (1792). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ripiphorinae.
It was assigned to Coleoptera by Latreille (1796); to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1798); to Mordellonae by Latreille (1802); to Rhipiphoridae by Scudder (1890) and Scudder (1900); and to Ripiphorini by Bouchard et al. (2011).
