Reticuloceras (Verneuilites) was named by Librovitch (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Glyphioceras verneuili.

It was reranked as Verneuilites by Sepkoski (2002), Korn (2006) and Furnish et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Reticuloceras by Librovitch (1939); to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Surenitidae by Korn (2006); and to Surenitinae by Furnish et al. (2009).
