Wellerites was named by Plummer and Scott (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-u C Mosc-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Wellerites mohri. It is the type genus of Welleritidae, Welleritinae.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Welleritidae by Korn (2006); and to Welleritinae by Furnish et al. (2009).
