Archexyela was named by Riek (1955). It is not extant. Its type is Archexyela crosbyi. It is the type genus of Archexyelinae.
It was assigned to Xyelidae by Riek (1955) and Carpenter (1992); and to Archexyelinae by Rasnitsyn (1964), Rasnitsyn (1969) and Taeger et al. (2010).
