Episageceras was named by Noetling (1904) [Sepkoski's age data: P Djhu Tr Indu-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302,1251]. Its type is Sageceras wynnei.

It was assigned to Medlicottidae by Spath (1934); to Prolecanitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Episageceratidae by Leonova (2002) and Korn (2006); and to Episageceratinae by Furnish et al. (2009) and Leonova (2019).
