Gigasirex was named by Rasnitsyn (1968). Its type is Gigasirex longipes. It is the type genus of Gigasiricidae.
It was assigned to Gigasiricidae by Rasnitsyn (1968) and Carpenter (1992); and to Gigasiricinae by Rasnitsyn and Zhang (2004) and Taeger et al. (2010).
