Latisageceras was named by Ruzhencev (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nm Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Episageceras latidorsatum.

It was assigned to Prolecanitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Episageceratidae by Korn (2006); and to Episageceratinae by Runnegar (1969) and Furnish et al. (2009).
