Taxonomy
Megapterites was named by Cockerell (1920). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Megapteritinae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Formicium by Blank et al. (2009) and Bolton (2012).

It was assigned to Pseudosiricinae by Cockerell (1921); to Pseudosiricidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Megapteritinae by Maa (1949) and Schiff et al. (2012).
