Megapronorites was named by Ruzhencev (1949) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 304,1251]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Prolecanitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pronoritinae by Korn (2006) and Furnish et al. (2009).
