Metapronorites was named by Librovitch (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-l P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 1251]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Pronoritidae by Leonova (2002); to Prolecanitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pronoritinae by Korn (2006), Furnish et al. (2009) and Zhou (2017).
