Michiganites was named by Ruzhencev (1962) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 954]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Prolecanitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Prolecanitinae by Korn (2006) and Furnish et al. (2009).
