Taxonomy
Thecosmiliopsis elegans was named by Lebanidze (1991). Its type locality is Tepebashe Mountains, Abkhaziya, which is in an Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian perireef or subreef limestone in Georgia.

It was recombined as Thecosmilia elegans by Kiessling (2014).
