Taxonomy
Prolecanites was named by Mojsisovics (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 304]. It is not extant. Its type is Prolecanites mojsisovicsi. It is the type genus of Prolecanitidae, Prolecanitacea, Prolecanitinae.
It was reranked as Goniatites (Prolecanites) by Etheridge (1894).
It was assigned to Goniatites by Etheridge (1894); to Prolecanitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Prolecanitinae by Korn (2006) and Furnish et al. (2009); and to Prolecanitidae by Korn and Sudar (2016).
