Metaceratodus was named by Chapman (1914).
It was assigned to Neoceratodontidae by Apesteguia et al. (2007); to Ceratodontoidei by Czepiński et al. (2021); and to Ceratodontidae by Schultze (2004), Previtera and González Riga (2008), Cione and Gouiric-Cavalli (2012), Louys and Price (2015), Panzeri et al. (2020) and Panzeri (2023).
