Serphites was named by Brues (1937). It is the type genus of Serphitidae, Serphitoidea, Serphitinae.
It was assigned to Serphitidae by Kozlov and Rasnitsyn (1979), Carpenter (1992) and Engel and Perrichot (2014); and to Serphitinae by Engel (2015).
